DeepChord and Echospace started off as barely more than a rumor supported mostly by the continous scarcity of their records. The duo comprised of Detroit's Rod Modell and Chicago's Steven Hitchell have spent nearly two decades producing low-key electronic music both bordering on the verge of myth. They're considered by many the most noted producers operating in the dub-infused aftermath of the Basic Channel axis and all its myriad offshoots. Their landmark album, "The Coldest Season" on the celebrated Modern Love imprint was named album of the year in over 40 different magazines around the world and was listed as one of "The Best Albums Of The Decade" in Resident Advisor. The Detroit duo also record under a a variety of monikers (cv313, deepchord, intrusion, phase90, variant, etc.) and have continued to carve out an evocative, immersive sound born out of a love and passion for analog circuitry, sound design, field recordings and non-conventional methods of recording. But it's also work that's quintessentially building upon the Detroit electronic scene where it was born, and that divine marriage of roots and vision make the work at once so highly considered, so pertinent and so timeless. This marks the first Echospace (Rod Modell & Stephen Hitchell) project since 2012's, "Silent World" album release. On this new project, a collaboration with one of their closest friends and mentor, the late Michael Mantra, who's contribution to society cannot be overstated. Michael's theories on ‘Brain Hemisphere Harmonic Healing’ were instrumental in the development of vibrational and sonic therapy. His experiments in the neural affects of sound paved the way for for what has now become healing music. In his honor, we're moving forward with a project we started some years ago and has finally come to form. Echospace plays Michael Mantra, "Sea Shell City" is a 70 minute voyage into the furthest depths of the mind, featuring three tracks of ambient drone-based sonic worlds. Where gentle waves of organic harmonics induce an almost meditative state of being. On this album sounds were sculpted with the use of hydrophones, piezoelectric transducers, wind harps, and binaural dummy-head microphones creating snapshots of normally unheard sonic worlds. Analogue oceans in slow motion, allowing one's mind to float into those mystical quiet zones, the brain hemisphere-sync effect Michael Mantra fostered for nearly three decades is ever present. We're continuously reflecting on the teachings of Michael and in his honor, preserving the essence of sound and vibrational healing through music for immersive journeys into the vast beauty of atmosphere, the mind, nature and the inner self.

Liner Note:

Michael Mantra was a close friend and mentor. He was a man who dedicated his life to harnessing the subtle energies contained in soft noise and using them for the betterment of mankind. Mike believed that listening with our whole heart and soul was the key to enjoying life to the fullest. He created auditory gradients for changing states of mind, and believed sound was the key to unlocking unseen universes. 25 years ago, Mike (fully) understood things about sound that modern books on vibration-healing are just touching on today. His contribution to society cannot be overstated. He dedicated himself "to the spiritual liberation of all sentient beings" through his sound-works. Desmond K. Hill once said that Mike's neuro-soundtracks could "radically transform the way human beings function psychologically". "After 20-30 minutes of listening, I was incredibly relaxed with a lasting sensation of well-being... no concerns or thought crowded my mind, firmly in the present as opposed to being under the influence of memory or worries about the future... completely located in the now, with intense clarity, and deeper crispness of visual perception and thought". Mike was a sound-wizard who was at least 30 years ahead of the curve.

Rest In Peace Michael Mantra 1950 - 2014. You will never be forgotten. You made the world a far better place for so many of us, and your teachings continue to give solace to thousands.

This is the remastered original "Starlight" from the Godfather of Techno, Juan Atkins aka Model 500, originally released on 12" by Metroplex in 1995. Includes 9 new remixes specially commissioned by Echospace. This classic masterpiece was originally engineered by Basic Channel's Moritz von Oswald and recorded at the Basic Channel studio in Berlin sometime in 1993-1994. Upon release, this track quickly became a cult favorite from Derrick May to Derrick Carter, and infected house, techno, ambient and even dub DJs alike. A song so powerful, it led to a change in techno music forever and was a shining example of what Detroit was all about: innovation. Juan Atkins was the first person to apply the word "techno" to music. He found new ways of making sound, and in so doing, he influenced nearly every genre of music in the 1980s and beyond. Yet his name is not well- known beyond the world of electronic dance music. He might, in fact, be one of the most obscure of modern music's true pioneers. This CD has been mixed together seamlessly for an uninterrupted listening excursion through the many shapes and forms of this song's incarnations. First, we offer the remastered original from Ron "Motown" Murphy, who spent countless hours restoring this treasure from 1/4" tapes. Then we find ourselves captivated in the pure, refined deepness of Deepchord's towering menace of space and bass. Echospace manage to give Juan's original just enough percussion flare, with wave frequencies rushing through a field of delay which spin around your head. This leads into a widescreen electro rendition from Soultek, and Convextion serves up some Kompakt-ish schaffel grooves, but with a hypnotic Detroit effect. Mike Huckaby makes good use of the Waldorf Wave before we enter ambient territory from Echospace who combine daring production techniques with vibrant forms of texture and color. Sean Deason presents a stomping killer with devastatingly beautiful synthesized notes and a sweet 909, and Phase90 presents breathtaking pads and a slow motion effect so powerful, it could only be compared to the works of Thomas Köner or Wolfgang Voigt's Gas project -- this is love in lo-fi. Finally, Intrusion takes it out with a dubbed-out, dreamy ambient voyage.

Brand new, hot off the press freshness from Deepchord and Soultek's Echospace hookup, following the epic "The Coldest Season" album for Modern Love, and a recent twelve for their eponymous imprint - a twelve that sold out in a matter of hours. "Sonorous" finds us in the dense thicket of dub reduction, the endlessly reverberating bounce of layered echo/chords drenched in machine-made fuzz and all the melancholy it entails. The chiming melodic phrasing counterbalances the percussion perfectly, making for one of Echospace's most perfectly formed, quietly propulsive pieces to date. the "Version" on the flip is even more widescreen, the layers stripped back to a bare-bones alignment that allows you to fill in the gaps where the melody once was - an epic reduction that makes most dub techno you'll have heard this year seem vacuous. Extremeley limited pressing - Hurry to secure a copy. -Boomkat

Clearly happy with the recent success of the Echospace and Modern Love releases, Rod Modell and Steve Hitchell (Soultek) are delivering their hyper-limited 12”s at a rate that’s becoming veritably prolific. Their latest on UK label Fortune8 retains the deep, dubby sound of The Coldest Season, but nudges it away from the glacial towards the reggae-oriented rhythms of ‘Empyrean’.

The first side is a gently percussive mix by cv313 aka DeepChord, aka Rod Modell. With beats more wooden than padded, and a relatively busy, clipped bass, Modell has crafted warm ambient percussion that gives way periodically to structureless washes. It’s an intimate piece of music that brings you into its confidence with a nonchalant groove. The ‘version’ mix verges into tick-tock reggae, with a (relatively) tightly coiled rhythm and sensual basslines that build imperceptibly until a delicate drop opens briefly out into quiet plains. The illusion of momentum and suspension are both there, in the head-nodding timelessness, but it’s (relatively) cut and dry, exchanging the cavernous grottos and grand gestures of the Modern Love for something almost upbeat.

Modell and Hitchell have delivered a less thunderous slab of vinyl than might have been expected, but it makes sense in terms of their partnership – they’ve brought us in from the cold to a warmer, less shadowy place closer to the equator reflecting a shift towards Hitchell’s Jamaican dub influences. 4/5 -Resident Advisor

Seems that we're getting blessed with new Echospace/Deepchord related material on an almost weekly basis at the moment - but when the quality is of this calibre it doesn't detract from the sense of excitement round these parts. "DBMX" is another rumbling low-end shuffle with all the swing and soul you'll have come to expect from Hitchell and Modell over the last twelve months. The hi-hats offset the sheer weight of the bass drum, making for a classic Berlin session in warmest analogue style. The CV313 reduction on the flip takes a more rugged stance, the upper registers almost completely discarded, squashed by the sweeping bass reverberation dominating the mix. The Echospace reduction, on the other hand, is an almost completely beatless rendition, the stabs softened and transposed to create a pitter patter of neon pads and suggested melodies that are just utterly compelling. Another masterful session from echospace...-Boomkat

Deep as the sea and sounding submerged somewhere miles under it, this three track EP finds Echospace in fine style, with three contrasting tracks. OBMX is incredible undersea dub that sounds like it should be accompanied by deep sea exploration footage. 313 reduction is finely tuned dubsided techno and echospace reduction just does without the drums altogether. -Bleep

O B M X is a mixture of covert bass tones and the shuffling of hazy shifting sand dunes in mighty fine dub style, while fans of more traditional techno structures may find the cv313 reduction more compulsive, a robust techno creature with a propelling groove that’s quite different to anything we’ve heard before from the e c h o s p a c e school of thought. Finally, the e c h o s p a c e reduction stretches the whispy ambience into a specimen all of its own. Magnificent. -Intellar Stellar Sounds, England
