A future classic - a project resurrected from a collaborative effort of the minds of late and great tastemaker and creator Mike Huckaby & Echospace's, Stephen Hitchell. Coming up on over 15 years since this project was conceived while working together on the Model 500 "Starlight" remix project back in 2008, this project truly captures a beautiful moment in time.

During this period there was something magical in the air, a creative synergy and understanding of all things deep! The original mix (2008) results from a few sequences and patterns developed out of Wavetable ideas Mike was creating for a sample library he was curating at the time. The sweeps and transients found in these lo-fi wavetables truly add to the Detroit sound Mike's legacy was built upon, always staying true to his roots.

After a few projects together (and more forthcoming) another collaboration was born with SF based (via Glasgow) producer, Federsen who simply put gives us a deeper than deep tribal stomper we are certain Huck would be dropping at peak hour! On the flip, cv313 + Federsen reunite to surf Mike's wavetables once more, creating an addictive hook with a sick Detroit saw bass deeper than the ocean floor!

Intrusion's Dub closes out the EP and sends the listener deeper into the abyss, offering sonic designs from another planet, dubbed out into eternal bliss! We truly hope this project resonates and captures some of Mike's creative spirit and sound design. This 12" is a tribute to a true Detroit hero who's contributions to music and the culture are few and far between, a true legend. R.I.P. HUCK

Apparently the double-pack of remixes issued last July of new takes on Juan Atkins and Moritz von Oswald's classic just wasn't enough. While Mike Huckaby's version does appear on the CD compilation of the vinyl releases, his deeper-than-space rework also gets its own limited-edition, color-splashed single release more than a year after the project first saw the light of day. Outside of the collectability factor of all Deepchord/Echospace-related releases, this is one well worth picking up for the material itself, easily two of the most DJ-friendly in the series.

Huckaby goes for a deep dive into Detroit/Berlin fusion, layering those famous cosmic chords over a propulsive, minimal kick and hi-hat combo in seemingly effortless fashion. Taking a less-is-more approach, Huckaby lets the raw material work for him rather than forcing the action—those shimmering, liquid synths wash over each other, phasing ever so slightly, hanging on for what seems like forever; when he finally makes his move and strips it all back to just the beat, the sensation is like what I imagine taking that first step into zero gravity feels like.

On the flip, Intrusion (one of Stephen "Soultek" Hitchell's solo monikers) strips it back even further into ambient territory. Hitchell's beatless odyssey unfolds itself in perfect slow motion over a full 18 minutes (the version on the CD is a mere seven), conjuring the infinite nature of space itself—cold, vast, empty, timeless, immersive—above it all and yet still light years away from everything. It's perfect fodder for an enterprising DJ to drop over and under just about anything that could use a bit more atmosphere, but I prefer to play it at home, where at low volume it really reveals its magic. -Resident Advisor

This is the remastered original "Starlight" from the Godfather of Techno, Juan Atkins aka Model 500, originally released on 12" by Metroplex in 1995. Includes 9 new remixes specially commissioned by Echospace. This classic masterpiece was originally engineered by Basic Channel's Moritz von Oswald and recorded at the Basic Channel studio in Berlin sometime in 1993-1994. Upon release, this track quickly became a cult favorite from Derrick May to Derrick Carter, and infected house, techno, ambient and even dub DJs alike. A song so powerful, it led to a change in techno music forever and was a shining example of what Detroit was all about: innovation. Juan Atkins was the first person to apply the word "techno" to music. He found new ways of making sound, and in so doing, he influenced nearly every genre of music in the 1980s and beyond. Yet his name is not well- known beyond the world of electronic dance music. He might, in fact, be one of the most obscure of modern music's true pioneers. This CD has been mixed together seamlessly for an uninterrupted listening excursion through the many shapes and forms of this song's incarnations. First, we offer the remastered original from Ron "Motown" Murphy, who spent countless hours restoring this treasure from 1/4" tapes. Then we find ourselves captivated in the pure, refined deepness of Deepchord's towering menace of space and bass. Echospace manage to give Juan's original just enough percussion flare, with wave frequencies rushing through a field of delay which spin around your head. This leads into a widescreen electro rendition from Soultek, and Convextion serves up some Kompakt-ish schaffel grooves, but with a hypnotic Detroit effect. Mike Huckaby makes good use of the Waldorf Wave before we enter ambient territory from Echospace who combine daring production techniques with vibrant forms of texture and color. Sean Deason presents a stomping killer with devastatingly beautiful synthesized notes and a sweet 909, and Phase90 presents breathtaking pads and a slow motion effect so powerful, it could only be compared to the works of Thomas Köner or Wolfgang Voigt's Gas project -- this is love in lo-fi. Finally, Intrusion takes it out with a dubbed-out, dreamy ambient voyage.
